Spatiotemporal heterogeneity in recruitment of larval parasites to shore crab intermediate hosts: the influence of shorebird definitive hosts

چکیده
Parasitism is a major biotic determinant of animal population dynamics and community structure. Temporal and spatial heterogeneity in parasitism is commonly observed in intermediate host populations. Understanding the causes of temporal and spatial variation in the recruitment of parasites is crucial if we are to manage host populations and animal communities effectively. Here, the temporal and spatial dynamics of Profilicollis antarcticus and Profilicollis novaezelandensis (Acanthocephala) infections in three species of shore crabs (Macrophthalmus hirtipes, Hemigrapsus edwardsii, and Hemigrapsus crenulatus) are examined in relation to the distribution and abundance of shorebird definitive hosts. Temporal patterns of infection were observed in M. hirtipes but not the other two species. Spatial heterogeneity in recruitment of acanthocephalan larvae to M. hirtipes and H. edwardsii populations was found both within and between locations. Weak evidence is found that infection levels in crab populations are related to the distribution and abundance of shorebird hosts both temporally and spatially. In this system, abiotic factors seem to be at least as important in determining how infection levels vary in time and space as the input of parasite eggs from bird

Effect of acanthocephalan parasites on hiding behaviour in two species of shore crabs.
The effect of acanthocephalan parasites (Profilicollis spp.) on the hiding behaviour during low tide of two species of shore crabs (intermediate hosts), Macrophthalmus hirtipes (Brachyura: Ocypodidae) and Hemigrapsus crenulatus (Brachyura: Grapsidae), was examined at Blueskin Bay, South Island, New Zealand. Exposed M. hirtipes were found to have significantly higher infection levels than did hi...
متن کاملMesoscale spatiotemporal variability in a complex host-parasite system influenced by intermediate host body size
BACKGROUND Parasites are essential components of natural communities, but the factors that generate skewed distributions of parasite occurrences and abundances across host populations are not well understood. METHODS Here, we analyse at a seascape scale the spatiotemporal relationships of parasite exposure and host body-size with the proportion of infected hosts (i.e., prevalence) and aggrega...
متن کاملRelating bird host distribution and spatial heterogeneity in trematode infections in an intertidal snail—from small to large scale
Shorebird abundance and spatial distribution of larval trematodes in the New Zealand mudsnail, Zeacumantus subcarinatus, were investigated in soft-sediment intertidal bays within Otago Harbour, South Island, New Zealand. In a small-scale study, recruitment of trematodes to caged sentinel snails and the prevalence of infection in free-living snails were examined across a grid of fifteen 50·25 m ...
متن کاملHost sharing and host manipulation by larval helminths in shore crabs: cooperation or conflict?
Larval helminths of different species that share the same intermediate host and are transmitted by predation to the same definitive host may cooperate in their attempts to manipulate the behaviour of the intermediate host, while at the same time having conflicts of interests over the use of host resources. A few studies have indicated that intermediate hosts harbouring larval helminths have alt...
متن کاملField evidence of the impact of two acanthocephalan parasites on the mortality of three species of New Zealand shore crabs (Brachyura)
The effects of the acanthocephalan parasites Profilicollis antarcticus and P. novaezelandensis on the fecundity and mortality of three species of shore crab (Macrophthalmus hirtipes, Hemigrapsus edwardsi and H. crenulatus) are examined. The number of eggs produced by female crabs was strongly correlated (all P<0.05) with carapace width; parasite load was not a significant determinant of female ...
